What is process service?

Process service is the delivery of legal documents to notify a person or business about a court matter. The required method depends on the court, case, and document.

Who can serve papers?

Who may serve legal documents depends on the state, court, case type, and document. JPL coordinates with qualified servers for the location of your assignment. Send us the documents and service address so we can set it up correctly.

How can I contact you?

How do I get my paperwork to you?

You can send us your assignments in one of 4 easy ways:

How do I get started?

Why hire a professional process server?

A professional server can document service attempts, follow the instructions for your assignment, and prepare a proof or affidavit of service. The rules vary by jurisdiction and document type.

Process Service FAQs: Pricing and Payment

What do your prices include?

Our process-service rates are $99 for Standard, $125 for Priority, and $175 for Same Day, per party, per address. We explain what your rate includes upfront, with no hidden fees. If the location or other circumstances require a different rate, we will contact you and obtain your permission before proceeding.

How do I pay for services?

We accept checks, money orders, credit cards, Zelle and Venmo. You can pay through our payment portal.

How many service attempts are included?

The number of attempts depends on the service type and location. Before starting, we will confirm the attempts your quote covers and discuss any additional work or fee.

How does pricing work?

We quote service by party and address, with the rate based on location and urgency. We confirm the fee before starting and discuss any added work, such as another address or a stakeout, before proceeding.

What are your deposition officer fees?

The setup fee is $50 if JPL Process Service LLC serves the subpoena, or $75 if someone else serves it, including another process server or a friend.

Once records begin coming in, we bill processing at $150 per hour in 15-minute increments. The minimum initial processing charge is $37.50 in either situation. We bill any additional processing time at the same rate, in 15-minute increments.

Process Service FAQs: Timing and Updates

How long does service take?
  • Standard: Starts 3 to 5 business days after receipt.
  • Priority: Starts the next business day after receipt.
  • Same Day: Starts the same day, where available.

These timeframes refer to when the first service attempt begins, not guaranteed completion.

What if the server cannot complete service before my court date?

Contact us as soon as you know the deadline is approaching so we can give you the current service status. Your attorney or the court can advise you about deadlines, continuances, and any other procedural options.

How do I check the status of my service?

You can review available updates in the client portal or contact our office at info@jplps.com or (866) 754-0520. Please include your job number when you contact us.

What happens after the server completes service?

After service, we prepare and send the proof or affidavit documenting the completed assignment. If you need court filing assistance, let us know so we can confirm availability and the fee.

Process Service FAQs: Common Situations

What happens if an address is wrong?

If the address provided is incorrect, we can conduct a skip trace for an additional fee to help locate a new address. We will explain the cost before proceeding. Locating a possible address does not guarantee that the person lives there or that service will be successful. We will keep you informed of the results and any additional service options.

Can you serve someone at a workplace?

Often, yes. Access to a workplace and the permitted method of service depend on the location and applicable rules. Send us the workplace address and any useful schedule details.

What is substitute service?

Substitute service is a method that may be available when personal delivery is not completed. The requirements vary by jurisdiction, case, and document. We record what occurs and follow the instructions and applicable rules for the assignment.

What if the person is avoiding service?

Our servers document their attempts and share updates with you. Depending on the circumstances, we can discuss another address, a stakeout, or a locate search, along with any additional fee.

Can someone refuse to accept service?

Refusing to take documents does not always prevent service, but the rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances. The server documents what happened, and the court determines whether service was valid if it is disputed.

Yes. JPL coordinates nationwide process service through a network of local servers. You work with our office as your one point of contact for assignments and updates.

Do you offer court filing and eFiling?

Yes. JPL assists with court filing and eFiling where available. Tell us the court, document type, and deadline so we can confirm the service and fee.

Can you serve subpoenas?

Yes. We coordinate service of witness, records, deposition, and other subpoenas. Send the documents, service address, and any deadline or special instructions so we can review the assignment. Do you offer skip tracing?

Yes. If an address is missing or appears outdated, we can discuss a paid locate search. However, a possible address does not guarantee that the person is there or that the server can complete service.
