California Court E-Filing,
Made Simple.

Our California court e-filing services help you submit prepared documents without a trip to the courthouse. Place your order online, tell us your filing instructions, and get updates through your client portal.

How California Court E-Filing Works

Whether you file regularly or need help with one submission, these five steps explain what to expect.

  1. Prepare your documents

First, gather your completed documents as readable PDFs. Also include required signatures and attachments.

  2. Identify your court

Provide the California county, court, case type, and case number if one has been assigned.

  3. Choose your service

Next, choose standard service or call to confirm a same-day request. Also tell us about any deadline.

  4. Place your order

Once you are ready, upload your prepared documents, add filing instructions, and complete your order in the portal.

  5. Receive updates

Then check your filing status and retrieve court-returned copies when they become available.

Before You Order

Having the right information ready helps us process your request. Please provide:

  • Completed PDF documents and any required attachments.
  • The court, county, and case type.
  • Your case number, if assigned, and the party names.
  • Clear filing instructions and any deadline.
  • Your contact information and payment details through the portal.

JPL submits the documents you provide. You or your attorney remain responsible for selecting and preparing the documents, meeting filing requirements, and determining deadlines.

How Long Does E-Filing Take?

There are two separate stages: submitting your documents and the court deciding whether to accept them.

JPL submits your documents

Standard service includes submission within 2–3 business days after we receive your complete order. Same-day service includes submission that day for complete orders received by 3 p.m. Pacific. For urgent filings, call before ordering to confirm availability.

The court reviews your filing

After submission, the court reviews the documents and issues an acceptance or rejection. However, review times vary by court and workload. A submission receipt is not the same as a filed copy.

Same-day service concerns submission, not guaranteed court acceptance. Allow time for court review and any corrections. For the court’s review process, see California Rule of Court 2.255.

California Court E-Filing Questions

Here are answers to common questions about ordering, fees, and filing status.

How do I e-file court documents in California?

Start by checking whether your court accepts e-filing for your case type. Then prepare your documents, open the JPL filing portal, and provide your court and case information. Upload the PDFs and complete your order. JPL submits your prepared documents according to your instructions.

How much does California court e-filing cost?

JPL’s standard e-filing service charge is $12.95. Same-day service is $22.95, subject to availability. Court fees are additional. If the court rejects your documents, a resubmission is billed again. Contact us if you need help confirming your total.

Can JPL submit my documents for me?

Yes. Provide your prepared documents and filing instructions through our online portal. We handle the submission. However, we do not choose legal forms, prepare your case, or provide legal advice.

Is same-day e-filing available?

Yes. The cutoff is 3 p.m. Pacific for a complete same-day order. Call (866) 754-0520 before ordering to confirm availability. The court controls when it reviews and accepts the submission.

How will I know whether the court accepted my filing?

Check your filing status in the client portal. After the court responds, you can review the acceptance or rejection information and access court-returned copies when available. Finally, keep the confirmation and filed documents for your records.

What happens if the court rejects my filing?

Review the court’s rejection notice to understand the stated reason. Next, you or your attorney must address any needed corrections and decide the next step. Rejected documents are billed again when resubmitted. Before reordering, contact JPL to arrange another submission and confirm the charges.

Can I e-file a proof of service?

Yes, where the court accepts that document electronically for your case type. Provide the completed proof of service, case information, and filing instructions. If you also need documents served, you can order process service through JPL.

Is e-filing the same as serving the other party?

No. E-filing sends documents to the court. In contrast, service delivers documents to the other parties using an appropriate method. Do not assume an e-filing order includes process service or electronic service; specify any additional service you need.

What if my court requires a physical filing or courtesy copies?

Contact us with the court location and delivery instructions. We can discuss walk-in filing or a separate courtesy-copy delivery request. Availability and fees depend on the location and scope.
