How to become a Temporary Judge in Los Angeles County Court
For any of our attorney clients at JPL Process Service LLC that wish to be a temporary judge, here is your opportunity! Recently issued at Los Angeles Central Superior Court you may do just that if you qualify.
If you are feel you are qualified and would like to Volunteer there are some important guidelines.
Requirements to Qualify:
Bar Membership:
Must be an active member of the State Bar of California in good standing for at least 10 years.
Background:
Must have no felony convictions and no pending State Bar disciplinary actions.
Mandatory Training:
Must complete required coursework including 3 hours of Bench Conduct and Demeanor, 3 hours of judicial ethics, and 3 hours in their specific substantive area of law (e.g., family law or small claims).
Application and Administration:
No Employment status:
Serving as a temporary judge does not create an employment relationship with the court.
How to apply:
Attorneys can submit the application form available via the Los Angeles Superior Court and email it to TempJudgeProgram@lacourt.org.
Oversight:
Performance is reviewed by a temporary judge committee, and participants must adhere to strict advertising and title restrictions (prohibited from calling themselves “judge” outside of official duties).
Temporary judges serve at the discretion of the Presiding Judge and must be members of the California State Bar in good standing for at least 10 years as outlined in the California Rules of Court Governing Temporary Judges section 2.810 – 2.819 and 10.744 – 10.746.
