Before You Upload

1. Check your court and deadline
First, confirm the county, courthouse, case type, and documents are eligible for electronic filing. Also review current court instructions and document exceptions. Allow time for holidays, court review, and possible corrections. Call JPL before placing an urgent order.
2. Make your PDFs ready
Next, open every PDF and check for missing, sideways, blurry, or cut-off pages. Also follow the court’s file-size and scan requirements. Use searchable text or OCR when technologically feasible without damaging the document image. If form fields must be flattened, save a separate submission copy and preserve valid electronic signatures.
3. Check signatures and protected information
Before uploading, verify who must sign and the required signature method. Also, do not assume a typed name or /s/ works for every signature. Follow the current signature and original-retention requirements.
In addition, permanently redact protected information using a PDF redaction tool. Then remove review comments, tracked edits, and unnecessary metadata.
4. Assemble your filing packet
Use the latest required forms and include supporting papers and any required cover sheet. Then check that case numbers, party names, and case categories match throughout the packet. Next, group or separate PDFs according to court instructions.
Finally, review page numbering and exhibit references. Where required, bookmark each exhibit’s first page with its identifier and a short description.
5. Give JPL clear instructions
Next, provide final PDFs, court and case details, party names, filing instructions, your deadline, and a contact for questions. Also review document selections and expected court, provider, and JPL charges. In addition, supply applicable fee-waiver information.
Request process service, electronic service, or courtesy-copy delivery separately when needed. An eFiling order does not automatically include them.
6. Check the court’s response
After submission, keep your submission confirmation and monitor the client portal for the court’s acceptance or rejection. A receipt alone does not mean the documents were accepted. Finally, save the filed copies after acceptance.
However, if rejected, review the reason with your attorney as needed and contact JPL about resubmission and charges. A resubmission is billed again.
General guidance, not legal advice. You or your attorney remain responsible for document preparation, signatures, service, filing requirements, and deadlines. Follow current court rules and instructions.

Place your order

Then check your filing status and retrieve court-returned copies when they become available.
How Long Does E-Filing Take?
There are two separate stages: submitting your documents and the court deciding whether to accept them.
JPL submits your documents
Standard service includes submission within 2–3 business days after we receive your complete order. Same-day service includes submission that day for complete orders received by 3 p.m. Pacific. For urgent filings, call before ordering to confirm availability.
The court reviews your filing
After submission, the court reviews the documents and issues an acceptance or rejection. However, review times vary by court and workload. A submission receipt is not the same as a filed copy.
Same-day service concerns submission, not guaranteed court acceptance. Allow time for court review and any corrections. For the court’s review process, see California Rule of Court 2.255.

Find Your California Court
E-filing availability and document requirements depend on the court and case type. Check the court’s current instructions before submitting your order.

California Court E-Filing Questions
Here are answers to common questions about ordering, fees, and filing status.
How do I e-file court documents in California?
Start by checking whether your court accepts e-filing for your case type. Then prepare your documents, open the JPL filing portal, and provide your court and case information. Upload the PDFs and complete your order. JPL submits your prepared documents according to your instructions.
How much does California court e-filing cost?
JPL’s standard e-filing service charge is $12.95. Same-day service is $22.95, subject to availability. Provider costs and any court or court-assessed software fees are additional. If the court rejects your documents, a resubmission is billed again. Contact us if you need help confirming your total.
Can JPL submit my documents for me?
Yes. Provide your prepared documents and filing instructions through our online portal. We handle the submission. However, we do not choose legal forms, prepare your case, or provide legal advice.
Is same-day e-filing available?
Yes. The cutoff is 3 p.m. Pacific for a complete same-day order. Call (866) 754-0520 before ordering to confirm availability. The court controls when it reviews and accepts the submission.
How will I know whether the court accepted my filing?
Check your filing status in the client portal. After the court responds, you can review the acceptance or rejection information and access court-returned copies when available. Finally, keep the confirmation and filed documents for your records.
What happens if the court rejects my filing?
Review the court’s rejection notice to understand the stated reason. Next, you or your attorney must address any needed corrections and decide the next step. Rejected documents are billed again when resubmitted. Before reordering, contact JPL to arrange another submission and confirm the charges.
Can I e-file a proof of service?
Yes, where the court accepts that document electronically for your case type. Provide the completed proof of service, case information, and filing instructions. If you also need documents served, you can order process service through JPL.
Is e-filing the same as serving the other party?
No. E-filing sends documents to the court. In contrast, service delivers documents to the other parties using an appropriate method. Do not assume an e-filing order includes process service or electronic service; specify any additional service you need.
What if my court requires a physical filing or courtesy copies?
Contact us with the court location and delivery instructions. We can discuss walk-in filing or a separate courtesy-copy delivery request. Availability and fees depend on the location and scope.
