How to Serve a Subpoena on time

Plan Subpoena Service Before Your Deadline

Subpoena service requires more than a fast delivery request. The type of subpoena, recipient, event date, and any required notices determine what must happen and when.

Identify The Assignment

Tell JPL whether the papers seek a witness’s appearance, records, or both. Include the issued subpoena, attachments, complete recipient details, event date, and your attorney’s service instructions.

Use the California Courts subpoena resources to find the relevant official guide. Different procedures can apply to a trial witness, deposition, business records, and consumer or employee records.

Check Notices And Fees

Some records requests require notice to the consumer or employee before the records custodian is served. See the official notice guide. Ask your attorney to confirm sequencing, objections, deadlines, and any witness or production fees.

Confirm Who May Serve

Do not apply the same eligibility rule to every subpoena. For example, California Courts describes a trial-witness subpoena procedure that allows personal delivery by any adult, including a party. Other documents and notices have different requirements.

Order Early And Track The Result

Ask about first-attempt availability when you order. Same-day or priority dispatch does not guarantee a completed service, a witness’s attendance, or production of records. Allow time for address problems and any required legal follow-up.

The server documents the delivery and completes the appropriate proof. Confirm how the proof will be returned and whether you or your attorney must file or bring it to the hearing.
