Planning Service of Process in Another State

Need to serve legal documents in another state? JPL Process Service, LLC coordinates nationwide process service for law firms, businesses, and individuals. Whether your case is in California or elsewhere in the United States, a complete order and clear instructions help us arrange service at the requested location.
Confirm the requirements for your case
The permitted service method, who may serve, and the deadline depend on the court, document, and circumstances. Do not assume that the procedure used in one state applies in another. If you are unsure, consult your attorney or the court’s self-help resources before placing your order. The California Courts service guide is a starting point for California cases.
JPL Process Service, LLC serves the documents you provide and records what occurred. We do not set up cases, prepare legal documents, or provide legal advice.
What to send with an out-of-state service order
- The complete documents to be served, including any attachments.
- The recipient’s full name and service address, including the apartment or suite number.
- The issuing court, case number, service deadline, and hearing date, if applicable.
- Written service instructions, any relevant court order, and any required proof or affidavit form.
- Helpful identification details, known schedules, access restrictions, and specific safety concerns.
- Your contact information so we can reach you if an issue arises.
For service on a business, provide the exact entity name and intended recipient or registered agent. See our registered agent service information if your documents are directed to an agent.
Arrange the service and confirm the scope
Contact us with the location and deadline so we can confirm availability, pricing, and the requested service level. Ask what the quote includes, how attempts are handled, and whether additional addresses, waiting time, or other work would involve another charge.
Once the assignment is accepted, submit your documents and instructions through the client portal as directed. Keep your contact details current and respond promptly if the server needs more information. A rush request does not guarantee that the recipient will be located or served before your deadline.
What if the address is wrong or no one answers?
An unanswered door does not establish that the recipient has moved. Attempt details, access problems, and reliable schedule information can help determine the next operational step. If the address appears outdated, ask about skip tracing before ordering more attempts at the same location. Search results do not guarantee a current address or successful service.
If a different service method or court order is needed, obtain guidance from your attorney or the appropriate court resource. The server’s observations can document the attempts, but they do not replace that legal determination.
Receive the service documentation
After successful service, obtain the proof or affidavit describing the completed service. If service is unsuccessful, request the available attempt documentation. Confirm who is responsible for filing any required proof with the court; document delivery and court filing are separate tasks.
Service outside the United States involves different considerations. Seek case-specific guidance before treating an international assignment as an ordinary out-of-state order.
