Orange County Divorce Process, Part 3: Completing The Case

A divorce does not finish merely because papers were served or six months passed. The required decisions and final paperwork must be addressed, and the court must enter the judgment.

Confirm The Remaining Issues

Use the California Courts divorce guide or your attorney’s case checklist. Identify any unresolved property, debt, support, or parenting issues. Check which disclosures, agreements, and court forms remain outstanding.

Property And Debt Are Fact Specific

Do not assume everything bought during a marriage falls into a single category without exceptions. Ownership, timing, agreements, and other facts can matter. Get advice before agreeing to a division or relying on a simplified example.

Support Is Not A Fixed Three-Year Formula

Older language on this page describing a general three-year limit or a $2,500 or 20% cap was incorrect. Long-term spousal support depends on statutory factors and the facts of the case. See the official long-term support guide and consult a family-law professional about your circumstances.

Check The Final Judgment And Later Orders

Review the signed judgment and the effective date with your attorney or the court. Keep copies. If circumstances change later, follow the applicable process to request a new order rather than treating a private change as court approval.

Service Support

If a later request or enforcement document must be served, send JPL the completed papers and the specific instructions. Include the hearing date and service deadline when requesting availability.
